Cardiac output and blood volume in severe hookworm anaemia.

چکیده
The determination of cardiac output has been rendered easy and safe by the introduction of the method using radio-iodinated human serum albumin (IHSA) in conjunction with a suitable external counting system set up over the heart (Veall et al., 1954). Cardiac output is known to be increased in the presence of anaemia (Starr et al., 1934; Sharpey-Schafer, 1944; Brannon et al., 1945), but no work has been done to show the changes in cardiac output and blood volume with the improvement of anemia. The present paper shows that the blood volume is dciminished in hookworm anamia and that the increased cardiac output is lowered again with improvement of the an-mia.

Iron-deficiency anaemia: its effect on maximum aerobic power and responses to exercise in African males aged 17-40 years.
1. The physiological responses to exercise of two groups of industrial workers with moderate and severe anaemia were measured and compared with a group of matched controls, working and living under similar conditions. Exercise was performed on a stationary bicycle ergometer at five consecutive work loads. During the final minute of each exercise periods, oxygen intake, minute ventilation volume...
متن کاملPathogenesis of oedema in chronic severe anaemia: studies of body water and sodium, renal function, haemodynamic variables, and plasma hormones.
BACKGROUND Patients with chronic severe anaemia often retain salt and water. Fluid retention in these patients is not caused by heart failure and the exact mechanisms remain unclear. This study was designed to examine some of the possible mechanisms. METHODS AND RESULTS Haemodynamic variables, body fluid compartments, renal function, and plasma hormones were measured in four patients with oed...
متن کاملA System for Continuous Estimating and Monitoring Cardiac Output via Arterial Waveform Analysis
Background: Cardiac output (CO) is the total volume of blood pumped by the heart per minute and is a function of heart rate and stroke volume. CO is one of the most important parameters for monitoring cardiac function, estimating global oxygen delivery and understanding the causes of high blood pressure. Hence, measuring CO has always been a matter of interest to researchers and clinicians. Sev...
متن کاملTreatable factors associated with severe anaemia in adults admitted to medical wards in Blantyre, Malawi, an area of high HIV seroprevalence.
Severe anaemia is a common presentation in non-pregnant adults admitted to hospital in southern Africa. Standard syndromic treatment based on data from the pre-HIV era is for iron deficiency, worms and malaria. We prospectively investigated 105 adults admitted consecutively to medical wards with haemoglobin < 7 g/dl. Those with acute blood loss were excluded. Patients were investigated for poss...
متن کاملHookworm infestation as a cause of melena and severe anaemia in farmer.
Hookworm infections remain a major cause of morbidity in the developing world. Prevalence is highest in agricultural areas, where use of waste water for irrigation and poor hygiene increases infection rates among farmers. Infections present with gastrointestinal symptoms and chronic anaemia, and there are usually no signs of overt blood loss. The following report describes a case of melena in a...
